Australia- Lone Pine Koala Preserve

More on our trip to Australia here. Early in the week we visited the Lone Pine Koala Preserve. It was soooooo awesome. I got to cuddle a Koala. We got to pet the Kangaroos. I think that it is so great that a place that strives to preserve a creature lets you interact with them. Then they ask for donations to help keep them wild and free. Ok, you just fell totally in love with the creatures you held and scratched, of course you are going to donate! Maybe our zoo's should allow a bit more interaction.
Was the Koala soft? Well, yes and no. Have you ever washed and dried in the dryer one of your kids stuffed animals. They come out a bit rougher than they were before. That is how a koala feels. I think it is the natural oils in their fur. Dense thick fur and fuzzy. The part I loved the most was the little hands and claws gently holding on to my shoulders and her big eyes looking up at me. They have a funny little patch on their chin that makes them look like they are smiling. We watched and videoed Koalas for hours. Moms and babies were my favorite. They had them housed in low wall open areas and divided by age. There were mating couples, men, women, retirees, Kindergarten and mother and joey areas.

It was so cool to pet the Kangaroos and wallabies. The wallaby is a small kangaroo type animal. So very cute! Non of these had joeys, but at another location we did see wallaby joeys. We walked through this gate and there was this giganitic grassy area with trees and maybe a hundred hopping marsupials. We just walked up to the individual or herd and reached out to pet them. They lean in to the scratch like my dog does. They liked it. One little one was so happy I found her tickle spot her foot thumped and thumped as she leaned in for more. That was so fun. I did not want to leave.

Did you know that most of the animals indigenous to Australia are marsupials and marsupials are introduced and uncommon everywhere else in the world. They have marsupial mice and bats! It was science haven and Dave was loving it. I was too! We got to see so many animals, the Tasmanian Devil (pretty mild if you ask me), platypus, crocadile, Koodaburra birds, Dingos, a bird of prey show where there was the Sea Eagle a huge white Eagle, Emu (yes, I petted the Emu too), and this other bird that is huge and has a blue head and a ridiculous crown of bone on top. Crazy hair. etc. I took tons of photos. You can see them all here on snapfish. We also saw a flock of Lorakeets. If we did not already have our fill of green birds at home we went to feed these green pests. They were funny, loud and greedy. They scared a little girl who was in tears.

I was reading the first three books of The Guardians of Ga Hoole and one of the owls was a barn owl that looked like Soren. I finished all three and on the way home watched the movie on the plane. Books are much better! I now have the next three on hold at the library. Easy read. There are 15 of them!

 Kookaburra
 Lorakeets
Retiree (Koalas live to about 10 in the wild and 15 in captivity, one lived to 23!)
 Koala Cuddling
 Kangaroo petting

The Wallaby who liked a good tickle

we saw loads of these lizards

 Ohhhh! So cute.

What not enough green bird at home?

 Soren in real life

Keep on the Sunny Side

The Whites - Keep on the Sunny Side
(Depression Era song)

There's a dark & a troubled side of life
There's a bright, there's a sunny side, too
Tho' we meet with the darkness and strife
The sunny side we also may view

[cho:] Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
Keep on the sunny side of life
It will help us ev'ry day, it will brighten all the way
If we'll keep on the sunny side of life

The storm and its fury broke today,
Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear;
Clouds and storms will, in time, pass away
The sun again will shine bright and clear.
Let us greet with the song of hope each day
Tho' the moment be cloudy or fair
Let us trust in our Saviour away
Who keepeth everyone in His care
